Pest Control Licensing

The pest control industry in Florida is highly regulated. Pest control licenses in Florida are not easy to obtain. They require a specific combination of training and experience.

The State of Florida requires that everyone wanting to become certified to perform termite inspection, prevention or control in Florida must first work for someone like Russ, who is certified, for 3 years. It's very much like the master / apprentice system used in other industries.

Once applicants for this license have the proper combination of hands-on experience and relevant education, they are required to take 2 difficult exams for each certification. One exam measures their knowledge of pesticide safety, while the other measures very specific knowledge about a single category of pest control. Not everyone passes these exams. There are 4 different categories, general household, lawn and ornamental, termite, and fumigation. Russ Frank, the owner and manager of Florida Bug Inspectors, holds all 4 certifications.

Once obtained, the license must be renewed every year, either by taking the exam again (believe me - no one wants to do it that way!), or with 4 hours of education per category. Many certified operators, including Russ, attend more training than required each year. The latest research on pests, and constant changes in techniques, products and regulations require ongoing education.
