Ant Control
Ants – by the Thousands
Ant control can be a serious problem! If you've ever had a major infestation you know they can drive you crazy. Most are
not a health hazard – except fire ants, of course. The damage in the
image at the right was caused by fire ants. The culprit is in the image
below.

The Facts
There are about 20,000 different species of ants known on Earth, and they can be found in
almost every environment. They live in colonies that may include as few
as several dozens or as many as several millions
of individuals. Most common species in Florida either infest houses or yards,
but rarely both. And then there's carpenter ants. The most commonly encountered pest ants
in Florida are pharaoh ants, ghost ants, carpenter ants, native fire ants, imported fire ants,
crazy ants, thief ants, acrobat ants, and big-headed ants.
Solving the Ant Control Puzzle
Prevention is the first and best line of defense against the establishment of any pest insect,
including ants. Sanitation and inspection are the next pieces in the ant control puzzle.
Pesticide
sprays are usually a "quick fix" and ineffective in the long term because they do not
significantly reduce the ant population and do not affect the queen.
Ant Baits are an Advantage
Ant baits, carefully placed out of reach of children and pets, contain slow-acting poisons and have become
one of the tools of choice for professionals
during serious infestations. Homeowners however, are limited when using baits from the local
grocery or home improvement store. The variety of products and the level of technology
available to homeowners isn't even close to what the professionals have to work with. Some
baits contain insect growth regulators that primarily impact brood production and development.
Some baits contain metabolic inhibitors that primarily kill the foraging workers, the brood and
queen. Which type of bait fits your current problem?
Ants can be notoriously picky when it comes to baits. Different species of ants have different habits and different appetites. And they frequently change their little ant minds. In addition, some species of ants have large colonies with multiple queens. Pros know that the colony isn't dead until ALL the queens are dead.
Advantage - Professionals
You gain the advantage on the pests by hiring a professional. They understand the ants – down to
the specific species. They understand the tools and technologies available. And they
use Integrated Pest
Management techniques. The result is the safest and
quickest solution to the problem.
