Did You Know...?

What is a pupa? It's the stage of life just before the adult stage. A flea pupa can hatch and jump on you as you walk by. That's like a human baby being able to jump 6 ft straight up immediately after it was born.

Flea Control

A Flea Infestation Nightmare
A severe flea infestation is a bit like a horror movie. Imagine walking into a vacant house that once had pets. Almost immediately your ankles and lower legs are attacked and covered by voracious fleas who haven't eaten for weeks, maybe months! In fact, a pupa (the stage just before the flea becomes an adult) can lay in waiting for up to 9 months waiting for a warm meal to walk by! Later your legs and ankles are covered with small itchy sores. Is there any hope of a remedy for such a severe infestation?

A Flea is a Flea... Or Not
The most common household flea is the cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis felis). Cat fleas are commonly found on both cats and dogs in North America. The dog flea (Ctenocephalides canis) is rarely found in the United States but common in Europe. The difference between the two can only be seen under a microscope.

Health Risks of Fleas
The cat flea is capable of transmitting plague and murine typhus to humans, but such reports are rare. Fleas are mostly a nuisance to humans and pets. Bites usually cause minor itching, but may be more irritating to those with sensitive skin. A common problem for the pet is flea allergy dermatitis (FAD), which pet owners in the United States annually spend millions of dollars to treat. Flea allergy dermatitis, may last up to 5 days and can cause intense itching, reddening at the bite site, hair loss, and secondary infection. Cat fleas also serve as intermediate hosts of the dog tapeworm (Dipylidium caninum).

An estimated $2.8 billion is spent annually on flea-related veterinarian bills. Pet owners spend an estimated $1.6 billion annually for flea treatment through groomers, $4 billion for over the counter treatments, and $348 million for professional flea control.

Do-It-Yourself Flea Control
Flea control is difficult for pet owners because it requires the elimination of fleas from the pet, the home, the yard, and breaking the cycle of re-infestation. Removal of fleas from the pet alone is useless. Immature fleas (eggs, larvae, pupae) develop off the pet and new adults simply jump on, beginning the infestation cycle once more.

Flea Control Solutions
An existing flea control problem can be solved, even if it's a severe infestation. A quick “knockdown” may be needed, but the long term solution is to break the re-infestation cycle using Integrated Pest Management techniques. Once that's accomplished, prevention techniques take over. These techniques require treatment of the pets, the home and the yard, all at the same time. Prevention is the first and best line of defense against a re-infestation of fleas.
