Preventing Stings
Severe allergic reactions to stings can be life threatening. Avoid disturbing wasp nests whenever possible. If they're already disturbed, run far enough away to be safe. Don't try to swat at them or flap your arms around trying to scare them. You'll just make them mad.

The best way to prevent stings is to call a professional for hornet and wasp removal.

Treating Stings
Wasps can sting repeatedly because their stinger is not barbed like a honey bees. The majority of problems requiring medical treatment result from an allergic reaction to the sting. Many of the complications from an allergic reaction respond well to various medications if given in time.

If you are allergic to insect bites of any kind, it is recommended that you seek medical attention immediately.

Basic wasp sting treatment consists of
1) Washing the sting with soap and water
2) Consider taking an antihistamine. For more information see WebMD:

3) Apply ice to the sting.

Common Florida Wasps & Hornets
There are 2 different types of wasps: social and solitary. Social wasps have nests, either elevated or in the ground. Solitary wasps typically lay their eggs in their prey and have no need of a hive or nest. Because solitary wasps have no territory to defend, so they're much more docile and much less of a problem. In fact they're considered beneficial insects because they prey on garden pests like caterpillars and beetles.

Paper wasps are also beneficial insects. They're only a problem if they build a nest too close to people. Their nests are of a unique structure, much like a honeycomb, without an outer shell like most bee and wasp nests.

Bald-faced hornets are definitely mean-looking. But they aren’t usually a problem. Hornets typically live in large, aerial nests and feed between dusk and dawn. While they can be a bit territorial, they are not as aggressive as the yellow jacket.

Yellow jacket wasps are easily identified by their thick waists and bright yellow patterns. These wasps are quite territorial and aggressive. They will defend their nests vigorously, often stinging several times before being killed. This wasp can be a serious problem.
